Making the Most of Their Money: Callum & Ellie's Story.
Young Professionals | Both aged 34 | Expecting their first child.
Their Situation
Callum and Ellie were earning well, building their savings and preparing to welcome their first child. But despite being financially comfortable, they didn't have a clear plan for their future.
Their financial position:
Callum: Business owner earning £65,000, plus an annual bonus of £20,000–£75,000
Ellie: Employed part-time, earning £32,000
Savings: £35,000
Outstanding mortgage: £140,000
Pensions: Several from previous employment
They were putting money aside but weren't sure if they were making the most of it, or even when they might realistically be able to retire.
The Challenge
Should they pay more towards their mortgage, increase their pension contributions or invest their savings?
With a growing family and fluctuating income, they needed a clearer understanding of where their money would be best placed and whether they were making full use of available tax reliefs and allowances.
How Acumen Helped
We worked with Callum and Ellie to bring their finances together into one clear plan.
By exploring their long-term goals, we helped them establish an ambition to retire around age 60 and a strategy to work towards it.
This included:
Reviewing and consolidating existing pensions where appropriate, alongside managing investments to support their long-term goals
Making effective use of pension tax reliefs and ISA allowances
Balancing mortgage repayments, emergency savings and long-term investing
Reviewing income protection, critical illness cover and estate planning needs
The Difference It Made
Callum and Ellie now had a better understanding of how to make their money work towards their goals, while protecting their family's financial future.

When is the right time to start using a financial planner?

Making small, smart financial decisions early in life can pay dividends down the line. Therefore, it is never too early to start considering how independent financial advice could help you turn your income into wealth.
Do I need a certain amount of money?

Many clients find that seeking financial advice early, even before they consider themselves "wealthy", helps them build strong financial habits, avoid costly mistakes and make the most of the money they already have. Your financial planner will create a strategy tailored to your individual circumstances, income, assets and goals. However, if you're unsure whether financial planning is right for you, we offer a free-of-charge, no-obligation consultation to help you understand your options and decide whether our service is the right fit.
How much should I start saving?

There is no set number and everyone’s circumstances are different. However, the earlier you start, even if it’s just a small percentage of your income for now, the sooner you will benefit from compound interest. During your no-obligation consultation, we will discuss your short- term and long-term goals to give you a clearer understanding of how much you would like to save and how much is possible when you take account of your income, bills and outgoings.
Do I need to know anything about investing?

Every investor has to start somewhere. So if you’re completely new to investing, don’t worry. We will guide you through the process without the jargon so you fully understand what you are committing to and the opportunities/risks involved.
What happens at our first meeting?

During your short no-obligation consultation, we will discuss your current financial situation, goals, money habits and attitude to investment risk. At the end of the session, you will receive…
What is included in my fee? (include external and ongoing costs)

Your fee includes an introductory call, an initial planning session and our team of financial planners working in the background to conduct investment analysis and ensure your investments match up with your short and long term goals.
What if my goals/circumstances change?

We review your portfolio every year to ensure it is still suitable for your circumstances and what you would like to achieve. However, if your circumstances change, you don’t need to wait for that annual review. Just get in touch with us and we will discuss the best way forward. [
Can I choose ethical and sustainable investments?

Absolutely. We prioritise environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors as a core part of our investment philosophy. We dedicate time and expertise to evaluating green investment options and if responsible investing is important to you, we'll recommend suitable options that align with your values as well as your financial goals.
Are you independent?

We are fully independent and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) as an appointed representative of Acumen Financial Planning. We provide impartial advice based solely on your circumstances, objectives and best interests, not on specific providers or products.
Can you help me if I have student loans or other debt?

Absolutely, and this is a very common occurrence. We can assist you in building a plan for managing debt alongside your other financial goals.
Can you combine my old workplace pensions?

If consolidating your pensions is suitable for your circumstances, we can help you combine your eligible workplace pensions as part of our ongoing advice service. We'll assess whether pension consolidation is in your best interests before making any recommendations.
Can you help me if I’m self-employed?

Yes, we have extensive expertise in this area and can help self-employed individuals ensure they have a financial plan that is specific to their circumstances and objectives. We also work closely with Enrich Tax Consultancy[3.1], a tax and accountancy firm based in-house, who can provide specialist support with tax planning, self-assessment and accountancy. This collaborative approach allows us to consider your wider financial circumstances and provide more joined-up support where needed.
