Paul Gillen

Chartered Financial Planner

Glasgow

When did you start in your role?
December 2023

Summary of background — what brought you here?

I had admired Acumen from afar for some time – when the opportunity to join came up I was very impressed with how excellent outcomes for the client is the primary goal (which is sometimes rare for this industry). I really wanted to work with a firm which shares my own philosophy around client care, and Acumen very much fits this bill.

What do you like best about your job?

It is amazing how much of this job is not about money – quite often it is about psychology and the intricacies of family relationships. I also really enjoy giving people the permission/confidence to spend their hard-earned savings – nobody is getting out of here alive, so enjoy it whilst you can!

Any other unusual jobs or hobbies?

After leaving university, I was assistant curator on the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame for the National Museum of Scotland.

Proudest career moment?

The year of 2019 – whilst juggling young children, regular commutes to London and lots of client work, I completed the last professional exam to become a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

Tell us something surprising that people wouldn’t know about you

I can proficiently drive a fork-lift truck!

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received (personal or work related)?

The golden rule – doing onto others what you would have them do onto you, is an all-encompassing mantra for life.
